02 Myths vs Facts

MYTH • As long as my child has a list of vocabulary words she has learned in class, it is enough to reinforce what my child has learned in class.

FACT • When a child goes to a language program once or twice a week, the take-home material is very important. List of words can actually be disadvantageous to the child as it is very likely that the non-native speaking parent or caregiver will not pronounce the word properly. I am probably a good example. Although I have been living in the New York for more that three decades, my accent is still “charming”. (I wish I had learned English properly!)
Aside from the above point, it is not engaging for a child to learn by reciting vocabulary words. We all know that for the long term memory to work, many details are important, including the level of “being emotionally engaged”.
