The LWFC's Westside classes are held at the Lucy Moses School (also known as the Elaine Kaufman Cultrual Center and the Abraham Goodman House). This renowned venue for music education offers the perfect environment for a child to focus and learn.
MYTH • As long as my child is exposed to french or another language with songs and games, my child will learn the target language.
FACT •
That is exactly what I thought 35 years ago. I realized that it takes more. It actually takes a well planned method that takes into account all the ingredients, including the fact that the child’s parent does not necessarily speak the language at home. It takes years to develop a proven method to teach children a language. It is the difference between having a ten-year business plan as opposed to an improvised start-up. The songs, games and visual aids must be correlated to each other and be different every session. Teachers need to be trained to use the right materials and the right pace, tone, pitch and sequence.
In addition, hearing traditional songs is a good supplement to having the child develop an ear for the language, but they do not cover the everyday vocabulary and a language’s grammatical patterns the child needs to learn. With the Thibaut Technique, once the child turns three and joins the children’s division, he/she will start to learn grammatical concepts in an engaging way.
